Product Description One of the most commonly asked questions in a mathematics classroom is, âWill I ever use this stuff in real life?â Some teachers can give a good, convincing answer; others hem and haw and stare at the floor. The real response to the question should be, âYes, you will, because algebra gives you powerâ â the power to help your children with their math homework, the power to manage your finances, the power to be successful in your career (especially if you have to manage the company budget). The list goes on. Algebra is a system of mathematical symbols and rules that are universally understood, no matter what the spoken language. Algebra provides a clear, methodical process that can be followed from beginning to end to solve complex problems. Thereâs no doubt that algebra can be easy to some while extremely challenging to others. For those of you who are challenged by working with numbers, Algebra I For Dummies can provide the help you need. This easy-to-understand reference not only explains algebra in terms you can understand, but it also gives you the necessary tools to solve complex problems. But rest assured, this book is not about memorizing a bunch of meaningless steps; you find out the whys behind algebra to increase your understanding of how algebra works. In Algebra I For Dummies, youâll discover the following topics and more: - All about numbers â rational and irrational, variables, and positive and negative
- Figuring out fractions and decimals
- Explaining exponents and radicals
- Solving linear and quadratic equations
- Understanding formulas and solving story problems
- Having fun with graphs
- Top Ten lists on common algebraic errors, factoring tips, and divisibility rules
No matter if youâre 16 years old or 60 years old; no matter if youâre learning algebra for the first time or need a quick refresher course; no matter if youâre cramming for an algebra test, helping your kid with his or her homework, or coming up with next yearâs company budget, Algebra I For Dummies can give you the tools you need to succeed. The included workbook features over 290 pages with hundreds of practice problems, along with answers and explanations to show you where you went wrong (or right). Add this onto Algebra I For Dummies, and you have an equation for numerical success! AUTHOR BIO: Mary Jane Sterling has taught mathematics at Bradley University since 1979, and has also taught math and the high school and junior high school levels.

A great resource for an unlikely crowd February 26, 2010 M. Gironda (Edison, NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I haven't taught students under 16 years old in years, however I purchased these books for some PreCalculus kids who really needed help with the fundamentals, and they really like them. These kids are not prone to studying math, but they find these books easy to read and very helpful. Mission accomplished! I have never been disappointed by a "for Dummies" book.

Best Investment I Ever Made August 4, 2009 Linda SF (California) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Having had to retake Algebra in high school, I considered myself worthy of this book's title. I bought the book and workbook (after sampling both at the library) and put in about 3-4 hours daily for 10 weeks. I went through the book and workbook once and then through the workbook again and I was able to pass through a college-level algebra exam. I knew exactly when those two trains that left Kansas City at different times and at different speeds would be 870 miles apart. I was no longer intimidated by x. The boost that this gave to my confidence is priceless.
