Product Description
Billions of dollars are spent each year researching stroke rehabilitation and treatment techniques, but most are not well communicated to patients or caregivers. As a result, many stroke survivors are treated with outdated or ineffective therapies. Stronger After Stroke puts the power of recovery in the reader’s hands by providing easy instructions for reaching the highest possible level of healing. Written for stroke survivors, their caregivers, and their loved ones, the book presents a new approach that is startling in its simplicity: stroke survivors recover by using the same learning techniques that anyone uses to master anything. Basic concepts are covered, including repetition of task-specific movements, proper scheduling of practice, challenges at each stage of recovery, and setting goals and recognizing achievements. Stronger After Stroke bridges the gap between stroke survivors and what they desperately need: easily understandable and scientifically accurate information on how to achieve optimal rehabilitation.

Best Book August 28, 2010 Richard Behmer (Victorville, CA United States) I purchased three books that all dealt with the aftermath and prevention of strokes. This book is, by far, the best written and most informative of the three. If I had known it was so informative, I wouldn't have purchased the other two books and wasted my money. Sure, the other books have a few points here and there, but they are clearly not of the caliber this book is. This will be the only one I keep for future reference which, I hope, I never need!
a highly informative read July 10, 2010 A. Hoffus (saskatchewan, canada) Very informative and easy to read. A great resource book for stroke survivors and their caregivers. After dad's stroke, this book made me realize that there is always hope if you choose to persevere. Now he realizes the same and does his therapy religiously.
by far the best stroke book I have read June 6, 2010 Thomas N. Haynes When I woke up in the Neuro ward days after my stroke my body didn't work as it had before. My entire left side - fingers, toes, arms, legs - refused to move. My first lucid moments were spent trying to get my newly damaged brain to conceptualize the enormity of the mountain of rehab that awaited in the days, weeks, months, and years (yes, years!) to come. This book provided me with the info I was looking for, and then some. When I finished reading, I felt like an expert. My dog-earred copy has since been passed along to my stroke survivor friends and therapists, too. It is by far the best stroke book I have read.
Stronger After Stroke May 11, 2010 Julie Hall I purchased this book for a friend whos husband had a stroke at a young age. She has been reading it and says besides reading her bible this is her second bible and has been such a great help to her. She has been using a highlighter to highlight the places she wants to go back to. She was having feelings she didn't like and understand and then felt better after she read about those feelings in the book. I am so glad that I purchased this book for her.
Must Read for Stroke Rehab January 30, 2010 Kristin Penney (Manhattan Beach, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently read, Stronger After Stroke, and all I can say is "Wow! why couldn't have Peter written this book 23 years ago?!" I personally had a stroke 23 years ago when I was only 15 years old. I think it is a must-read even for doctors, OTs, PTs, and any caregivers who deal with stroke patients in any form -from day 1 to 23 years out and beyond.
You will learn extremely important concepts like 'neurosplasticity' and when to consider not using any walking assitance, braces or arm aids to re-teach the body without false, long-term support ... and many more valuable pieces of information! All the terms used - neuroplasticity, repetitive practice, constraint-induced therapy, and mirror therapy - are incredible tools in following an effective therapy program.
The book is truly remarkable the way it spells out basically a sound 'prescription' for stroke therapy ... I believe that EVERY stroke rehab program, hospital bookstore and the like should have this book. I believe this is critical reading for recovery from a massive stroke.
