Mandatory for any Researcher either Begineer or Pro March 8, 2010 JOSE FERREIRA PINTO (Macau) If you are into research keep a copy for yourself and nearby your belongings or just about at any place where you sit upon and write your research. This book is by far the most compelling, simple and well written about research methods. It's simplicity may at first be seen as something for beginners. But I challenge you to read it and then do let me know if you have not unveiled the masterpiece that this book is. You make use of every sentence, every quote in any stage of your research. So read it and re-read it.
Mandatory for academic research, optional for anything else February 15, 2010 Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA)
This book is literally a classic because it thoroughly covers the challenges involved in basic academic research. It is intended as a course between covers on academic researchers. It covers formulation of issues and questions, determining and finding stories, making your claims and how to write and support them. Overall, it will be of use to anyone who is new to academic research and writing.
It is not a guide to sources nor a treatise on using particular resources. Rather it is more along the line of teaching principles of effective research and academic writing.
It serves students well, but is lacking for those with real-world research needs, such as in business and law.
Overall, like so many academic style guides, a nice book to keep on the shelf if you are outside of academia, but not a necessary one.
Jerry
Research guide that's fun to read! November 2, 2009 Miles Ashlock (Santa Barbara, CA USA) I was required to read this book for a class. I expected it to be relatively dull. It's not. It's a wonderful, straight-forward, humorous and enlightening introduction to "the craft of research." These authors have tremendous synergy and a wealth of experience among them. They write in a youthful and friendly tone, but with the incisive wisdom of elders. This book should certainly be a required read for any beginning researcher.
Good buy September 4, 2009 Joel Volkert I received it on time and, though I haven't read it, I skimmed it and it looks very interesting
I Wish This Book Had Been Mandatory Reading July 19, 2009 Ralaliel (Boston, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wish this had been mandatory reading for my first-year expository writing class. This book is a repository of things your teachers ought to have told you about gathering research, presenting research, and writing arguments.
If you need to do academic research and don't know where to start, or you don't know what to do next, or you are just reevaluating your work strategies, buy this book. It will not disappoint!
